Official Language:
German. English is widely spoken and French is also spoken, particularly in the Saarland. In the north of Schleswig-Holstein, Danish is spoken by the Danish minority and taught in schools. In Brandenburg and Saxony, Sorbic is spoken by the ethnic minority called the Sorbs and is also taught in about 50 schools. Regional dialects often differ markedly from standard German.

Currency:
The Euro is now the official currency of 12 EU member states (including Germany). The first Euro coins and notes were introduced in January 2002 and completely replaced the Deutschmark on 28 February 2002. Euro (€) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of €500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of €2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

Electricity:
230 volts AC, 50Hz. European-style round two-pin plugs are in use. Lamp fittings are screw type

Religion:
Approximately 34 per cent Protestant, 34 per cent Roman Catholic, with Jewish, Muslim and other non-Christian minorities.

Climate

Climate:
Temperate throughout the country with warm summers and cold winters, but prolonged periods of frost or snow are rare. Rain falls throughout the year.

Required clothing:
European clothes with light- to mediumweights in summer, medium- to heavyweights in winter. Waterproofs are needed throughout the year.

Berlin-Tegel (TXL) (Otto Lilienthal) is located 8km (5 miles) northwest of the city (travel time – 20 minutes).
Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) is 20km (12 miles) southeast of the city (travel time – one hour).
Berlin-Tempelhof (THF) is 6km (4 miles) southeast of the city centre (travel time – 20 minutes).
Bremen (BRE) (Neuenland) is 3.5km (2 miles) from the city (travel time – 10 minutes).
Cologne (Köln/Bonn) (CGN) (Konrad Adenauer) is 14km (9 miles) southeast of Cologne, and 21km (13 miles) northeast of Bonn (travel time – 25 and 35 minutes respectively).
Dresden (DRS) (Klotsche) is 9km (6 miles) northeast of Dresden (travel time – 25 minutes).
Düsseldorf (DUS) (Rhein-Ruhr) is 8km (5 miles) north of the city.
Frankfurt/M (FRA) (Rhein/Main) is 13km (8 miles) southwest of the city.
Hamburg (HAM) (Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel) is 9km (5 miles) north of the city centre (travel time – 25 minutes).
Hannover (HAJ) (Langenhagen) is 11km (7 miles) north of the city (travel time – 30 minutes).
Leipzig/Halle (LEJ) is 12km (7 miles) northwest of the city (travel time – 30 minutes).
Munich (MUC) (Franz Joseph Strauss) is 28.5km (18 miles) northeast of the city (travel time – 38 minutes).
Münster-Osnabrück (FMO) is 25km (16 miles) from the city.
Nuremberg (NUE) is 7km (4 miles) north of the city centre.

Passport valid for at least three months beyond length of stay required by all except: 1. EU nationals, and nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, holding a valid national ID card.

Visas :
Required by all except the following for periods not exceeding three months and for non-business (paid work) purposes: (a) nationals referred to in the chart and under passport exemptions above; (b) nationals of Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong (SAR), Israel, Korea (Rep), Macau (SAR), Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Niue, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, San Marino Singapore, Uruguay, Vatican City and Venezuela; (c) passengers continuing their journey by the same or first connecting aircraft, provided holding confirmed onward tickets and travel documents. However, the following nationals always need a visa even if transiting by the same aircraft*: Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Congo (Dem Rep), Eritrea, Ethiopia, The Gambia, Ghana, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic and Turkey. Visitors should check with the Embassy (or Consular section at Embassy).

Note: *A transit visa is not required by some of these nationals if in possession of a residence permit or visa for an EU country, or they possess a "Leave to remain in the UK for an indefinite period" or a "Certificate of entitlement to the right of abode"; contact nearest German Embassy or Consulate for more information.
