  • Kodagu, also known as Coorg and the Scotland of South India is a nature’s loving paradise.   • Climate: In July and August, rainfall is intense, and there are often showers into November. Kodagu has an average temperature of 15 °C, ranging from 11 to 28 °C, with the highest temperatures occurring in April and May.
  • Location and Geography: Kodagu is located on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. The district is bordered by Dakshina Kannada district to the northwest, Hassan district to the north, Mysore district to the east, the Kannur District of Kerala to the southwest, and the Wayanad District of Kerala to the south. The highest peak, Tadiandamol, rises to 1,750 metres (5,740 ft), with Pushpagiri, the second highest, at 1,715 metres (5,627 ft). The main river in Kodagu is the Kaveri (Cauvery).
  • Economy: Kodagu is a rural region with most of the economy based on agriculture, plantations and forestry, as well as one of the more prosperous parts of Karnataka. This is due primarily to coffee production and other plantation crops.
  • Flora and Fauna:Kodagu is considered rich with wildlife and has three wildlife sanctuaries and one national park: Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary, Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Nagarahole or Rajiv Gandhi National Park.

  • Talakaveri: the place where the River Kaveri originates. The temple on the riverbanks here is dedicated to lord Brahma, and is one of only two temples dedicated to Brahma in India and Southeast Asia.

  • Iruppu Falls: A sacred spot in south Kodagu in the Brahmagiri hill range. The Lakshmana Tirtha River flows nearby.

  • Dubare: mainly an elephant-capturing and training camp of the Forest Department at the edge of Dubare forest; on the bank of the river Kaveri along the Kushalanagara - Siddapur road.

  • Bhagamandala:situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Kaveri and the Kanika. A third river, the Sujyothi, is said to join from underground.
  • Dargah Sharief: the Holy Tomb, of Yemmemadu is one of the most sacred shrines for Muslims in Kodagu district. (35 km from Madikeri; Madikeri-Bettageri-Napoklu-Hale Taluku-Yemmemadu).
  • Getting to Coorg:
  • Road:There is a good set of road connections to the east and west. Madikeri is well connected with Mangalore, Mysore and Bangalore with road. Kodagu is also well connceted by road with other places like Kannur, Thalassery, and Wayanad of neighbouring state Kerala.
  • Rail:The nearest railway stations are Thalassery and Kannur in Kerala and Mangalore , Mysore and Hassan are other nearest Railway stations in Karnataka.
  • Air: he nearest airport is Mysore Airport which is 90 KM away and Mangalore International Airport around 180 km away and Bengaluru Interntional Airport which is 250 kms.
  • Activities in Coorg:
  • Trekking: Coorg has many verdant trekking routes in the midst of forests and hills, and it's best to go in the months from October to February. Some of the known trails are in the hills of Brahmagiri, where you could trek your way to the Irrupa Falls. You could also consider trekking to Pushpagiri, the second higest peak of Kodagu and Tadiandamol (the highest peak).
  • Golf: Avid golffers can tee off at the 9-hole course of Virajpet.
  • Angling: Valanoor is the backwater of the river Cauvery. It draws fishing lovers from all over India. You can try and catch the famous mahaseer and the best season is from October to May.
  • White Water Rafting:There are few good camps around Coorg that offer rafting down the Cauvery river. For some fast paced action, visit the Upper Barapole River to the south of Coorg in Brahmagiri. The best time for rafting is from mid-June to mid-September.

  • Madikeri Fort: Madikeri fort was first built by Mudduraja in the last quarter of the 17th century. He also built a palace inside the fort. It was eventually rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan who named the site as Jaffarabad. In 1790, Doddavira Rajendra took control of the fort.
  • Omkareshwara temple: Omkareshwara temple was built by Lingarajendra in 1820. It is located just 1 km away from the heart of the Madikeri. The temple has both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture.
  • Dubare Elephant Camp: Dubare Elephant Camp is located on the banks of Kauveri river in the Kodagu District of Karnataka. It is located on the other side of the river and accessible by a small boat ride.
